Online Rummy vs Poker: How Different Are They?

Card games have always been an enjoyable retreat among Indians. Be it a trip with close friends, a Diwali gathering, Ganesh Chaturthi, or a chance for a get-together, one of the favorite pastimes is playing cards. Rummy and Poker are among some of the most popular ones.

There’s never a dull moment while playing these card games. But many people don’t know the difference between Poker and Rummy. There are some similarities but also many differences between Rummy and Poker.

Similarities and Differences Between the Poker and Rummy Card Games

What is Rummy?

Rummy is a group of matching-card games marked for identical gameplay based on matching cards of the same rank or sequence and same suit. Any form of Rummy has as its fundamental objective the creation of melds, which can be either set (three or four kinds of the same rank) or runs (three or more sequential cards of the same suit).

Today there are several online rummy gaming platforms like Classic Rummy that offer exciting versions of the standard game, along with huge cash prizes that make the game not only more entertaining but also much more rewarding.

Basic Rules of Rummy

In a Rummy card game, a standard 52-card deck is used. The cards are ranked from 52 (low) to A (high). The online version of Rummy on Classic Rummy is played with 2 such decks and 2 face jokers each. Playing Rummy can be limited to a set number of deals or a specific score. Every game of Rummy revolves around card-melding or creating legitimate alignments of sequences and/or sets. To meet the goals, players take turns picking and discarding a card. The winner of that game is the player who skillfully melds all of their cards and makes a set or a sequence before any other players.

The online version of Rummy on gaming platforms like Classic Rummy has several exciting versions of the game other than the basic one. Each of these variations has slight differences in the rules, which one must check out before taking to the tables.

What is Poker?

Poker is a card game in which players surmise which hand is the best according to the rules of the game. Even though the game’s earliest known version only required 20 cards, it is now usually played with a standard deck, though in nations where short packs are popular, it may also be played with 32, 40, or 48 cards. As a result, there are variations in the number of decks used, the number of cards dealt face up or face down, and the amount shared by all players, but all poker games have rules that call for one or more rounds of betting.

Basic Rules of Poker

The Poker card game is played with a standard 52-card deck. (In some variant games, multiple packs are used, or a few joker cards are added.) The cards are arranged in the following order: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace. (Ace can be high or low, but it is most often high.) Although there are four suits (clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades), none are superior to the others. All poker hands have five cards, and the best hand wins.

There are Wild Cards in some games that can take on any suit and rank the player chooses. Jokers can act as wild cards at times, but other times the game will define which cards are wild (deuces, one-eyed jacks, etc.).

Similarities

Besides the obvious fact that both are card games and begin by dealing cards, both Rummy and Poker are similar in that they require the players to arrange and make sets of cards.

In Rummy and Poker, one can quit the game by folding up or dropping out whenever one wants to. As soon as a player wins, he/she has to prove the win by revealing all the cards.

Both Rummy and Poker require 2 or more players to play.

Difference Between Rummy & Poker

The basic difference between Rummy and Poker is that Rummy is primarily a game of skill and not based on luck. That is the reason why The Supreme Court declared it a game of skills in August 2015. It does not fall under the ambit of betting and gambling games. Hence, it is totally safe and legal to play online rummy games in India.

In contrast, Poker involves luck and betting, and therefore many states in India have banned it, including Assam, Sikkim, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu.

Rummy is an older game that originated in the 18th century. Poker was invented much later than that – at the beginning of the 20th century.

Rummy is played traditionally in homes during family and friend get-togethers as well as on online rummy platforms like Classic Rummy. In that sense, it is a more social game than Poker, and the entertainment derived from it is as important as the lure of big prize money. Poker is a more individualistic game, played mostly in Casinos and, more recently, on digital platforms. The lure of the cash prize that one wins is the driving factor in playing the game.

Betting and luck are not major factors while playing Rummy. Players require skills like logic, analytics, and a keen sense of observation and memory, to win at Rummy. The rank of the cards you are dealt with is no doubt important, but thereon, the skill with which you steer your game becomes the most important factor.

In Poker, betting plays a vital role as the entire game revolves around it. The outcome of your games depends only and only on the cards you are dealt with, and that’s where luck steps in.

Rummy Card Game vs Poker Card Game – Which One Is Better?

Both Rummy and Poker are hugely popular games as they provide a heady dose of entertainment and prize money. However, if asked to choose between the two, Rummy would be the clear winner as it is a more social, traditional game played with family and friends, whereas Poker veers towards the taboo side as it is considered pure gambling by many.

Another reason that Rummy would be the choice of a majority of players is that Rummy requires and hones skills like memory, logic, observation, etc. Hence, Rummy would be the game of choice between the two amongst a majority of Indians.
